TERRAFORM
Terraforming is the process of modifying the environment of a planet, moon, or other celestial body to make it more Earth-like and capable of supporting human life or ecosystems. In this piece Terraforming is understood as a technological ability, both hardware and software, including data analysis, AI generative systems, simulations and tools to shape the natural environment accordingly. Laser represents a surgically precise instrument for controlling the terraforming process, guiding generative AI with purpose and enabling the controlled evolution of natural growth.
"Terraform" is an audiovisual projection art piece that transforms the facade of a building into a living canvas for generative plant growth. The artwork explores the relationship between technology, code, and the organic processes it mimics. The laser, a metaphor for the "code" driving this transformation, directs an AI system that generates evolving, lifelike plants in real-time.
The building's surface becomes a symbolic medium — its rigidity representing human structures, juxtaposed against the soft, dynamic vitality of the projected plants. Through the laser's meticulous guidance, the growth of these plants is both deliberate and unpredictable, emphasizing how technology can enable organic-like creativity. The plants projected onto the rigid facade also suggest a potential future, where buildings include natural growth and become a semi-living structures, enhancing the surrounding environment with benefits including positive adjustments in humidity, temperature, air quality, energy efficiency, biodiversity and social benefits improving mental well-being.
"Terraform" invites viewers to reflect on the role of technology as both a tool and a creative force. It challenges us to consider how, when used with care and positive intentions, guided by principles of prosperity and sustainability, technology can contribute to a more harmonious and flourishing world, bridging the gap between the artificial and the organic.
